Do you have any mentors in your professional life?

I've worked with Steve and Chris for over twenty years and they're both a great example of what a mentor should be. They’re both really hardworking and consistently good at what they do.

What was your first paying job?

The first thing I got paid to do was be a football referee, when I was about 14 or 15. I only did it for one season. You need to be a different breed of person to take the sort of crap you get from parents and kids and carry on doing it! I can't have been that bad at it though, they asked me to referee a cup semi-final and be a linesman in a cup final at the end of that season.

What kind of music do you like?

I was 18 in 1996 at the height of Britpop so that era has been the main influence on my taste in music. Mostly anything that’s guitar based and quick 3 or 4 minute songs. I’m not into really long, self-indulgent guitar solos. I still try and keep in touch with new music, it's great to spot a new band when they’re starting out and watch them go on to do bigger and better things.

Most exciting part of your job?

I get excited by the legacy we leave behind when a job’s finished. I don’t think we realise sometimes the impact that the buildings we help create have for people and communities. It could be a hospital building, a youth centre in a deprived town centre or residential accommodation. Buildings that stand the test of time and have a positive effect on people's lives.

Introvert or Extrovert?

Introvert. I heard someone explain the difference between an Introvert and Extrovert as being an Introvert starts the day with a few coins and every time they have a social interaction they spend one of the coins. When all the coins are gone then they're done for the day and need to get home and recharge. An extrovert gets a gold coin after every interaction and loves to keep collecting more coins. I fall into the first category although there are some days I start with more coins than others.

What’s your idea of a perfect day?

Time with family & friends and an Everton win.
