Greater Manchester is planning for all new buildings to operate at net zero by 2028 and is expecting buildings that are currently going into the planning stages to reflect these requirements. London has required major developments to meet net zero expectations for several years. Bath & North East Somerset now expects new homes to match their energy use with on-site renewable supply and Lancaster has set its own target for new homes to reach net zero operation by 2028. These examples show a wider national shift and more regions will begin to follow.

Heating and hot water generation is often the largest source of C02 emissions during a building’s life. Modern low carbon systems, especially heat pumps, provide reliable warmth and hot water while cutting both carbon output and running costs.

Generate Your Own Power

Solar panels are a simple and effective way to produce clean electricity on site, and there can still be a role for biofuel CHP systems in the right conditions. Considering the allocation of PV panels early in the design stage can increase the amount of energy generated.

Reduce The Risk Of Overheating

Smart design can help to avoid the need for mechanical cooling. Shading, well considered glazing and natural airflow help keep indoor spaces comfortable during warmer months without relying on energy hungry systems.

Ventilate Simply & Effectively

Fresh air is essential but does not always require a large central system. Natural ventilation should always be used where it suits the layout. When mechanical ventilation is necessary, small room based heat recovery units can deliver efficiency without adding complexity.

Use Efficient Lighting And Control
