Care UK

Steven A Hunt & Associates have worked for many years with clients Waystone Developments Ltd on both their Barlborough and Glasshoughton sites. At the beginning of 2004 Waystone entered in to a contract with Care UK Afrox Healthcare Ltd to build a new Diagnostic and Treatment centre (DTC) at the Barlborough site.

Care UK plc, the leading UK provider of contracted health and social care, and Afrox Healthcare Ltd, the largest hospital provider of acute services in South Africa formed a joint company to operate the building on behalf of the Department of Health under the government’s Diagnostic and Treatment Centre procurement programme.

The DTC delivers a range of diagnostic and outpatient services, planned elective inpatient and day case surgery, and community rehabilitation.

The building consists of Consulting Rooms, Pharmacy, Radiology, three Theatres, TSSU and a 38 bed ward facility split in to small individual care centres.

Two of the three Theatres have laminar flow canopies designed to deliver 500ach with a discharge velocity at 2.0m from ffl of 0.38m/s and a discharge velocity at 1.0m from ffl of not less than 0.2m/s.

The building is on two floors and is complete with a comprehensive fresh air ventilation system and a VRV heat pump installation for environmental control. The dense services in the tight distribution zones required careful coordination and planning.

The building is equipped with an extensive IT network linked to a central comms room and patch facilities. Bedhead trunking distributes medical gases and patient entertainment systems. CCTV and access control has been designed in close liaison with the end users. The complete building is has BMS control inter-communicating with a number of outstations and capable of being accessed remotely.
