The project involved an extension to an existing shed, divided into three areas designated for specific processes. The area housing two main presses (essentially, large ovens)presented specific challenges. To prevent inevitable overheating, we designed a ventilation system to maintain temperatures at acceptable levels. And to accommodate the large cables serving the presses, we recommended trenches in the ground – calculating depth, distribution and routing to enable the structural engineer to convert them into buildable solutions.
We solved the issue of high level lighting maintenance by designing a walkway for the high level crane used in the building, and positioning the lights just above the walkway level.
And predicted energy usage was a remarkable 18% better than energy benchmarks, as a result of integrated sustainability. A key feature was the introduction of CHP to generate electricity; the heat rejection from the unit was then used to service an absorption chiller which gave chilled water that could be used as a ‘free’ cooling medium in another area of the building.
