Thermal Modelling

Sustainable development is at the top of Steven Hunt & Associates’ agenda.

By combining engineering knowhow with cutting edge CAD and Dynamic Simulation Modelling software we can investigate a plethora of sustainable methodologies to provide tailored assessments that identify the most financially viable solutions to improve energy efficiency suited to your business needs.

Dynamic Simulation Modelling
Dynamic Simulation Modelling enables us to model large and complex buildings and to accurately predict energy consumption, CO2 emissions, operating costs and occupant comfort. The impact of solar energy on and in a building is critical and the 3D model is used for calculating detailed external shading used in the simulation. TAS is unique in being able to shade diffuse sunshine.

Natural Ventilation
Each window, door, ventilator or other aperture has its relative altitude and orientation automatically calculated to give a potential airflow network through the building. This means that natural ventilation is simulated automatically, and we can choose which apertures are open, when, and by how much.

Comprehensive Databases
Construction materials and glazing types can be allocated from comprehensive databases.

Heating & Cooling Loads
We use the software to compare the relative merits of different heating and cooling strategies. We can then evaluate newer systems such as displacement ventilation or floor supply of fresh air with chilled beams or ceilings, as well as calculating loads for standard systems such as fan-coil or vav.

Solar Shading
With TAS internal solar shading and tracking sunshine across spaces is possible. Realistic analysis of glazed double façade systems, with the possibility of natural or mechanical ventilation, requires good modelling of the transition of solar energy across the various glazing elements.

Bulk Air Flow
By generating a natural ventilation air flow network between the apertures in the building model, we are able to perform fast and stable simultaneous building simulation with integrated bulk air flow for commercial buildings. By simultaneously calculating internal air temperature, the effects of buoyancy forces are also integrated into the analysis. It is even possible to have interaction between mechanical ventilation and natural ventilation forces.

Dynamic Simulations
With all these ingredients carefully modelled we can produce hourly dynamic simulations that accurately reflect reality, for any period of days up to a complete year. The resulting data can be automatically processed to give frequency distributions of internal temperatures.

Drawing Production
We use AutoCAD MEP software to design all of a building’s ductwork, piping, plumbing, lighting, and power systems. MEP increases efficiency with tools made specifically for building systems design and improves design accuracy by automating drafting tasks.
By using DWG files from the extended design team, we can better coordinate our design and significantly reduce the number of design interferences.

Drawing Management
The Drawing Management feature formalises and automates the processes related to building system design and documentation. When the project files are managed with this feature, we have better consistency in all aspects of the project, and everyone on the design team has a centralised project environment for accessing the most current documents.

Coordination between Disciplines
With MEP, coordination across the entire project is automated. By leveraging the design created in MEP, we can make faster design decisions, produce more accurate construction documents, and avoid time-consuming rework later in the project.
